Scratching is underway! - Scotia 4
Scotia's portrait is "all scratched". She's much too light at this stage, I need to go in and add dark areas with a tech pen, then I can add color! Once that's done, she'll look like a black dog. - Scotia 8 (Final)
Scotia's finished portrait 7" x 5" scratchboard, with watercolor from my own reference photo - Scotia 5
Black ink added with a technical pen. I inked more places than I had originally planned, but I let the drawings tell me what they need. I'll scratch as needed to better blend the inked areas. Watercolor on her tongue, eyes, inner ears. Next I'll add watercolor on all of her fur and her nose. - Scotia 1
This is sweet Scotty girl, Scotia. I haven't done any scratching yet, this is just the transfer onto the scratchboard. 7" x 5", from my own reference photo. - Scotia 6
Scotia's portrait with scratching to soften the ink I added in the previous stage. Also new: highlights in her eyes! - Scotia 3
Update on Scotia's portrait. That large black blob area needs to be scratched... - Scotia 7
Scotia's portrait with watercolor added to her fur & nose. Nearly finished at this point, but it needs some fine-tuning here and there, and to be a bit darker overall. - Golden Retriever Pup
Golden Retriever Pup: 2" square scratchboard with colored ink. *sold* - Off Duty? - Final
Finished! 5" x 7" scratchboard (Ampersand Scratchbord), with watercolor and some India ink for re-inking & drawing long, black hairs. From my own reference photo taken at a dog play day many years ago. - "Whuuut?" Pit Bull Pup
"Whuuut?": 2" square scratchboard in progress. All scratched, ready for color - Off Duty? 4
With color (watercolor). I didn't spend a ton of time on color-correcting this scan. The dog looks pretty accurate, but the water isn't quite right. I'll take more time when I scan the final. At any rate, in the home stretch at this point. Next:scratching to add highlights on the dog, and separate him from the background. - "Whuuut?" Pit Bull Pup
"Whuuut?": 2" square scratchboard with colored ink. *sold* - Ranger 2
First layer of scratching on the dog is finished. Also some re-inking in a few places to add darks back in. Watercolor on the water too. That's streaky in places, but scratching in select areas will fix that. Next steps on Ranger will be scratching/re-inking to fine-tune and build depth. Then I can add color to him. - Ranger 1
Early stage of a 12" x 9" portrait of Ranger the German Shepherd Reference photo provided by my client Ranger loved the water, so that's what's going on in the background. It will taper off into black at the top, but otherwise it will look very much like the water technique I developed on "Determination" See it here: www.annran.com/website/gallery/pet-portraits/dogs/determination
