- Ranger 1
Early stage of a 12" x 9" portrait of Ranger the German Shepherd Reference photo provided by my client Ranger loved the water, so that's what's going on in the background. It will taper off into black at the top, but otherwise it will look very much like the water technique I developed on "Determination" See it here: www.annran.com/website/gallery/pet-portraits/dogs/determination - Off Duty? 2
Still working on scratching the dog, but I've started adding a water background. Read the story about the water here: When You Want Different Water - "Safety" 3
Washes of ink over the previous round of scratching. With the scratches underneath to provide texture, this layer of ink is smoother than the first layer. Still rough, but becoming more refined. - Jack 8 (Final)
Jack's finished portrait. 7" x 5", scratchboard with watercolor. Everything except the whiskers was scratched with a #16 X-Acto blade. I used a Slice ceramic cutting tool for the whiskers. The color in this image is more accurate than the previous one, it leans more toward magenta tones. - Ranger 1 - Face Detail
Face detail of Stage 1 - Magnolia Warbler
Also not a great photo, but these are cute & stylish warblers. Magee Marsh - Ottawa, OH - Blackburnian Warbler
Not a great photo, but this is my favorite warbler species. Magee Marsh - Ottawa, OH - Northern Cardinal
Magee Marsh - Ottawa, OH - Burrito Bouquet - Final
Stippling scratched to smooth out the texture on the hand. And this is the finished piece! "Cathy's Burrito Bouquet" Scratchboard, 5" x 7" - Burrito Bouquet - Greyscale Photo
The reference photo rotated, cropped and converted to greyscale. I tweaked the contrast a LOT! I also printed the same version in color, and a less contrast-y version so I could decipher some of what I was going on in the photo (burrito vs wrapper vs plate). - Burrito Bouquet 8
Stippling over the linear scratches on Cathy's hand to soften the look. Splotchy, but it does the job of breaking up the lines. Scratching the stippling will soften the splotches. - Burrito Bouquet - Reference Photo
Harold Farley's original photo. Thank you, Harold! - Burrito Bouquet 6
I did very little re-inking on the burritos. Most of the definition was created by short scratches following the contours of the tortillas. - Burrito Bouquet 7
Cathy's hand is taking shape, but it's rough. - Burrito Bouquet 2
More scratching and the rest of the table top.
