- Jack 2
First pass of color on his eyes, plenty of scratching left to do on the rest of him. - Jack 3
Some of the green from the eyes is scratched away so I could start layering color. A good portion of his fur is scratched at this stage too. Even though he's a black cat, I want texture and value changes in his fur, so much of it appears too light at this stage. That will get knocked back with washes of blue-grey watercolor in various shades once I've finished all the scratching. - Jack 6
Ready for color! This version is softer than the previous, where I had added back black. I softened & blended that black with scratching. - Jack 7
Now with color. Scratching needed to blend here & there, and to bring back some lighter areas. Whiskers will go on last. - Jack 8 (Final)
Jack's finished portrait. 7" x 5", scratchboard with watercolor. Everything except the whiskers was scratched with a #16 X-Acto blade. I used a Slice ceramic cutting tool for the whiskers. The color in this image is more accurate than the previous one, it leans more toward magenta tones.
