- Ranger 5 - Face Detail
Face detail of Stage 5 I didn't scan the entire drawing at this stage. More scratching since the last update has built up texture and depth, tones are blended. Highlights here and there, more contrast between his face & the water (although I'll tone down that white edge a bit). - Ranger 4 - Face Detail

Early stage of a 7" x 5" scratchboard portrait of Jack, the handsome Tuxedo cat. - Off Duty? 5
Almost finished ... Since the last scan, I scratched to bring back highlights on his fur, added a lighter edge on the tennis ball and the highlights in his eyes, and worked on the white parts of his fur a little bit. And miracle of miracles, I used the "Auto Color" adjustment in Photoshop and it did a pretty awesome job of fixing the scan. I usually can't rely on that setting, but I'm sure happy it worked this time! - Jack 4
All scratched, and I started inking with a tech pen to bring back the darkest areas. You can see that on the left side; I have to finish inking that large dark patch of chest on the left side and add ink to the right side. Then I can add watercolor & scratch to fine tune. His eyes need more work also. - Jack 8 (Final)
Jack's finished portrait. 7" x 5", scratchboard with watercolor. Everything except the whiskers was scratched with a #16 X-Acto blade. I used a Slice ceramic cutting tool for the whiskers. The color in this image is more accurate than the previous one, it leans more toward magenta tones. - Jack 6
Ready for color! This version is softer than the previous, where I had added back black. I softened & blended that black with scratching. - Jack 3
Some of the green from the eyes is scratched away so I could start layering color. A good portion of his fur is scratched at this stage too. Even though he's a black cat, I want texture and value changes in his fur, so much of it appears too light at this stage. That will get knocked back with washes of blue-grey watercolor in various shades once I've finished all the scratching. - Jack 5
Darkest areas added with a tech pen. The texture of those areas still looks a little "chunky", but I'll blend that out with some scratching. - Jack 2
First pass of color on his eyes, plenty of scratching left to do on the rest of him. - Hanna 1
Hanna the Harrier (breed of Hound), in progress. 5" x 7" scratchboard Reference photo provided by my client. I started with the railing to be sure it was headed in the direction I wanted, then began scratching on Hanna.
