I created this for the 2014 ISSA (scratchboardsociety.org) Exhibition, where I'm honored to say it won an "Award of Excellence". It also received an "Award of Excellence" in the 2015 California State Fair's fine art exhibit.
This is a 5" x 7" drawing on Ampersand Scratchbord. Most of this is just scratching and re-inking with a pen (then re-scratching/re-inking as needed to build the values). The table top is the only place I used ink wash.
Those are Cathy Sheeter's hands grabbing the burritos. The finger & thumb at the bottom left belong to Lorna Hannett. The reference is a photo taken by Harold Farley at a restaurant in Vancouver BC, July 2013.
The artist's statement that accompanied the drawing in the State Fair Exhibit: ""Cathy's Burrito Bouquet" represents a moment shared with colleagues. Scratchboard artists are few and far between, so we truly revel in our annual Society gatherings. The drawing is a departure from my typical subjects, but it was a thoroughly enjoyable piece to create; it holds a special place in my heart. The photographer and the two artists whose hands appear in the drawing are Master scratchboard artists that I'm proud to call friends."

- Burrito Bouquet - Reference Photo
Harold Farley's original photo. Thank you, Harold! - Burrito Bouquet - Greyscale Photo
The reference photo rotated, cropped and converted to greyscale. I tweaked the contrast a LOT! I also printed the same version in color, and a less contrast-y version so I could decipher some of what I was going on in the photo (burrito vs wrapper vs plate). - Burrito Bouquet 1
Transfer lines, some scratching and my experiment in the lower right corner to see if I could get the wood grain effect I wanted. To do that, I lightly scratched away the black with the flat edge of a #16 X-acto blade. It looked "scuffed" after that. Then I drew some lines at an angle, licked my finger and smeared the ink around. A highly technical process ????, but it worked! - Burrito Bouquet 2
More scratching and the rest of the table top. - Burrito Bouquet 3
More scratching and some stippling with ink on the plate. - Burrito Bouquet 4
At some point, I realized that what I'd put in as "table top" under her arm at the upper right didn't make sense and was actually the floor. It was the same color as the table in the photo. I covered that with black ink and worked the shirt a little to make it slightly lighter than black. - Burrito Bouquet 5
The initial linear scratches on the hands and plate to block in the values. - Burrito Bouquet 6
I did very little re-inking on the burritos. Most of the definition was created by short scratches following the contours of the tortillas. - Burrito Bouquet 7
Cathy's hand is taking shape, but it's rough. - Burrito Bouquet 8
Stippling over the linear scratches on Cathy's hand to soften the look. Splotchy, but it does the job of breaking up the lines. Scratching the stippling will soften the splotches. - Burrito Bouquet - Final
Stippling scratched to smooth out the texture on the hand. And this is the finished piece! "Cathy's Burrito Bouquet" Scratchboard, 5" x 7" - Burrito Bouquet - Detail 1
