Using a photograph for reference, Ann paints in watercolor on Yupo, a synthetic paper made of polypropylene. She uses a limited color palette and a looser painting technique, allowing the paper and paint to “do what they want” as part of the process. The slick, non-absorbent surface of the paper allows the colors to remain vibrant and to flow and blend differently than on traditional watercolor paper. Once the paint is dry, she adds just a touch of color pencil if needed.

Because these interpretive portraits are not as detailed or time consuming as Ann’s traditional style portraits, she is able to offer them as a less expensive alternative.

Any species or breed can be painted as long as a photo is provided.

This blog post shows the process of creating a greyhound portrait.
