  Artist's Bio

Ann Ranlett is an artist and illustrator specializing in nature drawings rendered in ink on scratchboard, watercolor, pencil and mixed media. She accepts commissions for pet and animal portraits and enjoys working with devoted owners and their beloved animals. Ann is also a photographer - looking for unique perspectives of the natural world.

A graduate of CSU, Sacramento, with a bachelor's degree in biology, Ann is a member of the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators (GNSI). She is also a member of the Auburn Old Town Gallery where her original drawings & paintings, reproduction prints and note cards are available.

At her annual Open Studios event, Ann offers demonstrations of her drawing techniques and discusses her artwork. Ann's art has won awards in both local and regional shows (see her resumé for a complete list). She also teaches art classes.

Prior to making the leap to full-time artist in 2003, Ann was senior technical specialist at Foothill Associates, a consulting firm in Rocklin, CA. Her responsibilities at Foothill Associates included producing computer generated maps & graphics, designing & maintaining web sites and creating illustrations for educational signage. Her interpretive signage designs and illustrations can be seen along the trails at Lake Natoma and at Mather Regional Park in Sacramento, CA. She also provided the illustrations for three interpretive signs to be installed at the Curtz Lake study area in Alpine County, CA.

Ann has also contributed a variety of illustrations to Sacramento Splash (a wetland education organization), Lincoln Arts, Loomis Basin Horseman's Association, Foothill Associates, the Sacramento Zoo, the Folsom Zoo, the Nature Conservancy's Cosumnes River Preserve and the Sacramento Chapter of Ducks Unlimited. Please visit the Clients & Links page if you wish to find out more about any of these organizations.

Ann and her husband, along with a border collie and a quarter horse, live in Newcastle (in Placer County, CA), where they’ve converted part of their acreage into horse property and landscaped other areas with an emphasis on native plants and wildlife habitat.

Artist's Statement:
“My lifelong interests in nature and drawing and my biological/scientific background make me well-suited and comfortable with realistically rendered pieces. I'm fascinated by the textures and colors found in nature.

I'm really in my element when working with ink on scratchboard; it’s quite forgiving and I like the challenge of creating intricate detail and texture with black, white and shades of grey. I also enjoy working in graphite pencil for the same reasons.

When I need a break from monochrome work, I switch to watercolor, although I'm likely to add a little pen & ink or color pencil to my paintings. In 2005, I started working with watercolor on Yupo, a synthetic paper. I'd been wanting to try something different and my "Paintings with Petzazz" pieces are the result. They're wildly colored and have quite a bit less detail, but they're still recognizable as a particular breed or pet.

I also enjoy photography. I take photos mainly for illustration reference material, but occasionally I end up with photos that are unique enough to stand on their own."
